Key Stage 4

THE NEW UPDATED UNIT WILL BE ADDED BEFORE SEPTEMBER 2023

ARCHIVE

These are older units that I am in the process of updating into a more cohesive programme.

ADDICTION

This unit of work builds on prior learning on Drugs and Alcohol but focuses much more on addiction in general. It covers what an addiction is and how it can manifest and the effects of withdrawal. It then goes on to look specifically at Drug and Alcohol addiction (recapping prior learning), gambling, gaming and internet and social media addictions. It highlights the causes, the symptoms and the treatments as well as highlighting where help can be found.

REALITY BITES

This unit gets the students to start thinking about their future. In my school students make their GCSE choices in Year 8 and begin them in year 9 so we also cover the options process and what sort of questions they need to find answers to before they choose their subjects. The first part of the unit however focuses on the connection between personality and career choice as well as getting the students to do research into a career that they are interested in.

HEALTHY BODY, HEALTHY MIND

This is a 2 part unit, the first part will focus on Physical Health and aims to bring together learning from previous years in PSHE, Food Technology, PE and Biology. It consists of 4 sections:

  • What do we mean by health and well being?
  • Healthy Diet and Eating Disorders
  • The importance of exercise
  • Sleep

The second part will look at Mental Health and Wellbeing. The main focus will be looking at the difference between mental health and mental illness as well as how to manage personal mental well being. It will also look at common mental health issues in Teens: Stress, Anxiety, and Depression.

CRIME AND CRIMINALITY

This unit of work falls more under Citizenship than PSHE but also covers the British Values. In it the students will learn about different political systems, different voting systems and how the system in the UK works. This will then lead on to a piece of group project work where the students will create political parties and run for office – the fictional School President.

RELATIONSHIPS AND SEX EDUCATION

In this unit, the students will be looking at some of the more controversial elements of RSE. The unit consists of 4 learning phases, looking at students thoughts on what should be included in RSE, recaps on contraception, consent and healthy relationships, and moving on to STI’s, and pornography.
